Miami basketball share Miami Heat: Recent Skid Doesn't Impact Title Contending Ability ?
Coach Erik Spoelstra said he enjoys games that don't follow a blueprint, that force you to find "a different solution" and "different ways to win" after his Miami Heat lost to the 76ers last Saturday in a game in which they shot just 25 percent from three, a stark contrast from the red-hot shooting that helped them get through Bam Adebayo's near seven-week absence.
If this is the case, Spoelstra must be ecstatic about this season. Despite having to play more undrafted players than any other team this season, the Heat are tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with Chicago, and Spoelstra has gotten them there by rearranging his lineups and using unconventional tactics.
It didn't turn out the way I expected. Miami's depth was regarded to be a weakness before into the season, with the team relying largely on the Jimmy Butler-Kyle Lowry-Adebayo triad while hoping for a breakout year from Tyler Herro. Herro has provided the latter, but Butler and Adebayo have combined to miss 42 games, with the three stars appearing together only 14 times.
On the fly and in varied capacities, Spoelstra has turned to the no-name likes of Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, rookie Omer Yurtseven and Caleb Martin, and every one of them has come up aces. Suddenly, the Heat, who went 14-8 without Adebayo and 11-4 without Adebayo and Butler, are in trouble.
Still, nobody's really talking about them. ?
The Bulls and Cavaliers are currently everyone's favorite surprise tales. The Brooklyn Nets are a walking advertisement. The Bucks are the current champions. With all of the Ben Simmons controversy, the Sixers couldn't possibly stay under the spotlight. The Warriors have the Splash Brothers back, despite their recent struggles. The Los Angeles Lakers have become the talk of the league, although for all the wrong reasons.
Meanwhile, the Heat quietly have all the signs of a title contender, as one of only two teams in the league with top-seven offensive, defensive, and net ratings (the other being Phoenix, which has the best record in the league). They had 13 clutch victories (in the top five), and 14 road victories (second).
There aren't many, if any, gaps in Miami's profile, just as there aren't many on its roster. Everyone on our crew does everything. Almost every player Spoelstra deploys on the court can shoot, pass, dribble, and defend, and most of them can do so at a high level.
And they do everything at full speed ?
And they do it all at breakneck speed. That is something that stands out when you are watching them. Out there, they're not just going through the motions. They aren't a classic running team, but don't mistake that for a methodical pace. Cutting aggressively, coming around screens and handoffs hard, driving and kicking, selecting and rolling until a decent shot becomes a terrific shot are all ways the Heat put continual pressure on defenses. Don't worry about the missed shot. That's a top-notch appearance. During Adebayo's absence, the Heat led the league with 15.2 made 3-pointers per game (at a 40 percent clip). The pass that initiated the sequence is what you should focus on: Duncan Robinson is able to attract two defenders.

Miami has a fantastic passing game. They average 66.9 points per game through assists, which is good for sixth in the league. In terms of passes per game, assists, and secondary assists, they're in the top ten. But it's usually the first pass, the one that doesn't necessarily show up on a stat sheet but pierces the defense so deeply that it's doomed to fail.

Disregard Kyle Guy's miss, a 10-day contract turned two-way player who can shoot, pass, and dribble, among other things (Guy is an NBA player and will eventually stick somewhere). Strus' kick-out pass off the cut was also outstanding. That ball had only been on his fingertips for a few seconds before he was rerouting it while avoiding a charge.

There are teams that make a lot of passes and teams that do a lot with their passes, and Miami is one of the latter. They taunt you with their passes, each one shifting you farther out of position, like a surgical tennis player positioning you for a kill shot.
It makes for an odd contrast, this club that benefits so tremendously from the strength of 3-pointers on offense but yet ready to concede so many of them to its opponents. According to Cleaning the Glass, Miami gives up 43.3 percent of its shots on defense, which is the highest percentage in the NBA.
The Heat place a premium on defending the paint, which they do in part by having big, muscular wings like Tucker and Butler dig down on drivers and swarm to the ball as it gets closer to the basket, and it works: Miami allows just 14.8 points per game within five feet, the fewest in the league.
